At the end of this curricular unit students should be able to:
– Identify areas that need the development of new evidence using health data science methods,
– Formulate feasible research questions, interesting, new, ethical and relevant in an adequate and complete way;
– Identify and bring together the most appropriate supervision team for the implementation of the proposed research project;
– Perform an appropriate literature review in order to justify the need for the project development as well as to characterize the state of the art,
– Identify the necessary elements to create a protocol to submitt the project to the Scientific Council, the Ethics Committee, for funding applications and to the development of a PhD thesis.

Identifying systematically areas in need of new evidence of development will help students choose the topic for their project.
Identification of the project, the structural formula of the research question and objectives as well as learning techniques and rules for creating abstracts will allow students to disclose their projects clearly to get a critical input from colleagues, supervisors and colaborators andorganize more systematically the logical reasoning necessary for the development of their project.
Knowledge of the rules for conducting a proper and systematic review of literature as well as to analyze the evidence of the quality will allow the student to identify the available evidence on the topic under study, check the state of the art and develop a critical sense.
The presentation of the structure of the research protocol will foster the understanding of the necessary elements to present their project to the Ethics Committee, Scientific Council and applying for grants.

This UC will be transmitted theoretically the structure of a research protocol and stimulated a critical attitude on the available scientific evidence.
Will be taught, using the example of topics presented by students, the structure of health research issues and the critical analysis of their feasibility, interest, novelty, ethics and relevance.
The process of forming a proper research team will also be adressed.
There will also be taught the rules for the development of appropriate literature reviews.
During the classes student participation will be encouraged as well as the application of the research projects of the students and discussion by teaching staff and other students will be promoted.
Some classes will be allocated to the formal oral presentation by each student of the protocol elements needed for the UC assessment.
Using a class scheeme that soncerns the knowledge sharing with immediate application to the context of each student is intended to promote the development of skills and behaviors required to integrate the concepts and applying them in the development of the PhD thesis and a scientific article.
